“The 11th Hour” – How We Can Save Our Planet

The 11th Hour

“The 11th Hour” is a film I would recommend going to see as a family. It promises to be pumped full of information from the worlds leading environmental scientists on how each and everyone of us can live a sustainable life free of pollution.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s “The 11th Hour” is a feature length documentary concerning the environmental crises caused by human actions and their impact on the planet. “The 11th Hour” documents the cumulative impact of these actions upon the planet’s life systems and calls for restorative action through a reshaping of human activity. With the help of over fifty of the world’s most prominent thinkers and activists, including reformer Mikhail Gorbachev, physicist Stephen Hawking, and Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai, “The 11thHour” documents the grave problems facing the planet’s life systems. Global warming, deforestation, mass species extinction, and depletion of the oceans’ habitats are all addressed, and their causes rooted in human activity. The combination of these crises call into question the very future not of the planet, but of humanity.

However, the most powerful element of “The 11th Hour” is not a portrait of a planet in crisis, but the offering of hope and solutions. Scientists and environmental advocates such as David Orr and Gloria Flora (note: these names can be interchanged for any of the experts) paint a portrait for a radically new and exciting future in which humanity seeks not to dominate the earth’s life systems, but to mimic them and coexist. “The 11th Hour” calls for a future now within our grasp that is both sustainable and healthier.

Rechargeable Wii Remote Pack

wii rechargeable

Do you and your kids love the Nintendo Wii? Our family sure does. We not only play the standard “Mario” games but we compete against each other on games like “Big Brain Academy” and “Wii Sports.” If you’ve used this gaming console, you’ll know that the super cool remotes drain the life from batteries really quick. At first we bought rechargeable batteries for it but now there’s an even easier option.

The Wii remote rechargeable battery packs uses a USB cable to recharge or they come with a charging stand. It will save you money while being kind to the environment.

Happy gaming!

Get Involved in the Billion -Tree Campaign

Tree Planting Family

The United Nations has set up an environment program to help organizations around the world plant one-billion trees. Committing as a family or in a community organization to plant trees will help them meet their goal.

We have but a short time to avert damaging and economically debilitating climate change. The solutions are numerous and, as many economists say, affordable when compared with the costs of complacency. The goods and services provided by forests are worth billions if not trillions of dollars to the global economy. Forests are natural and economically important sinks’, sequestrating carbon from the atmosphere and locking it away in trunks and branches. Globally, forest cover is at least one-third less than what it once was. It is time to reverse the trends, it is time to act.
Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director

All you need to do is do some research for tree planting organizations in your area and get involved. You can also make the pledge for yourself and your family by registering your pledge to their website at UNEP.org Make it a family day and get involved together.

Green Family Vacation

Family Vacation

Are you planning a family vacation and can’t quite decide if it will be Cancun, Hawaii, or Europe? Why not travel green by visiting places closer to home. Chances are there are many attractions near you that you haven’t discovered yet. Just go to your local information centre or travel websites to see all of the things you could do locally, you might be pleasantly surprised. You can also visit a nearby hotel and look through the pamphlets for vacation ideas. With the money you save on plane tickets or gas, you’ll have more spending power for your local family excursion. If you insist on flying, travel light. The more you pack the more fuel the plane has to use. Plus, you will want the extra room in your suitcase for all of the exotic stuff you will be bringing home.

Green Cooking – Wow!

The Home Shopping Network is selling these amazing (absolutely amazing!!!) pans that are more environmentally (and physically) friendly.

Jessica from the Alternative Consumer blog says it’s “the first cookware to use Thermolon non-stick coating, the new GreenPan line is ceramic based and doesn’t contain any PTFE – the chemical found in traditional degradable coating, or eco-hazzard chemical PFOA. Designed to be the last cookware you buy, this six-piece set doesn’t wear over time and the super non-stick release works up to a sizzling 850 degrees.

Bonus: Throw anything in, and skip the oil. Because nothing sticks, you’ll be cooking up healthier meals minus the once-necessary butters, fats or oils.”

The 6-piece set is supposed to be available on the Home Shopping Network now for $99.90 but it looks like they are sold old and are expected to have more later this month. I’m hoping because I will be one of the first to buy it!

Greening Up Your Dishwasher

Here are the Top 10 Tips for Making Your Dishwasher More Green:

1. Go for the full load
Before running the dishwasher, wait until you have a full load (same rule of thumb for the clothes washer). This will help make the most of the energy, water, and detergent the machine uses.

2. Choose your washer wisely
Choose a dishwasher that is rated for energy and water efficiency. In the U.S., you can start by looking for Energy Star rated appliances, which use 25% less energy than the mandated minimum. Also, know how to read the yellow EnergyGuide sticker you’ll find on all new dishwashers–as well as other appliances.

3. Join the clean plate club
Go for dishwashing liquid and powder that is natural, biodegradable, and free of petroleum and phosphates. Also look for products sold in bulk to save on packaging. Powdered detergents are lighter and so require less energy to ship. For more, see How to Green Your Cleaning. If you are running into spotting problems using phosphate-free detergents, try using a natural residue eliminator like Wave Jet.

Turn Your Whole House Off!

Yes, you read that correctly – turn your whole house off. We went on a road trip last week and one of the last things we did was unplug everything from the wall to avoid using extra energy. It’s amazing but leaving that toaster in when you aren’t using it does drain energy. It wasn’t a big deal but it would have been nice to turn everything off in one easy click…

whole house switch

Guess what? It’s totally possible to do now! Have you heard of the Whole House Switch? This incredible little gadget does it all for you. Read this:

Here’s a simple concept that belies a much more complicated system underneath (if, in fact, this is more than just a design concept at this point). The Whole House Switch by designer Jack Godfrey Wood is used to turn off all non-essential power in a house from one central location.

Of course, it’s not as simple as turning off all power coming into the house. Almost every home has some loads that they want to keep constantly connected, whether those are small, such as clocks, or larger ones like a refrigerator. The household heating and ventilation system also needs to remain powered in order to function. Even though it appears as just a single button, this switch needs to be connected to equipment to turn off each circuit in the house, except for those which are reserved for constant power. Specially designated “safe” plugs throughout the house could also be used for devices that would not be disconnected when the off button was pushed.

At present, this appears to be a purely conceptual design, but a real implementation of this could be an easy way for some people to use their homes with far greater energy efficiency.

Wow!!! This is such a great idea. I know that I will definitely be looking in to it – will you?
